I've been trying to sort out how we can easily get rid of all the confusing non-VJ-formatted derived files that archive.org generates when it makes your thumbs etc after upload.

To make matters worse, we manually deleted them once and then they all reappeared when they introduced the new beta auto-play video functionality.

Will keep trying to get archive.org's attention about these VJ-loop-related problems, but if anyone else here has any more pull, please use it! The derived files are goign to confuse the beejeebies out of newbs.

Just to be clear, no derivatives means no flash player to automatically play your movies for the user. They'll have to download them to see them.

But Analog Recyling's new ones don't have deritavtives, and their flash-preview works...

We just don't show the flv files on the details page, but they are there. (Click the http link blow all the quicktime files to see them.) We derive an flv file for each .mov file, they're just not displayed.

Since we don't make any OTHER derivatives from quicktime files, it just looks like there aren't any derivatives. If they had specified "no derivatives," there would be no flv files, and therefore no flash player.

If you upload something that we can make non-flv derivs of (like an .mpeg or .mpg), we will.

Hi,

Normally, just deleting them would do the trick - we don't usually rederive all the movie files like that, it was a special case for making this new feature work. So in general, just deleting the derivatives will work.

However, if you'd like to make SURE we don't create derivatives from the very beginning, there is a way.

I've attached a file to this post called identifier_rules.conf. Download this file.

When you create an item, upload your videos AND this rules.conf file - but make sure you change the identifier to have the same id as your item.

So, if you create an item called vjloop1, you need to rename the conf file vjloop1_rules.conf and upload it into the same directory you upload your movies into.

Our deriver software will see that conf file and not make derivatives.

So for future reference, my understanding for VJ Loops is that we need to make derivs for the thumbnails and flash-files, and then manually delete all the confusing non-VJ-appropriate streaming files.

Would this be correct?

Also, it's important for VJ Loop uploaders to remember to specify the right licence when they upload so that people can legally use their loops. This would not apply for VJ sets/performances, which are intended to be watched, not used by other VJs.

Thanks for your help.

Perhaps we can convince a friendly programmer to make a different config program to just make the specific derivs for VJ Loops section? ;)

Yes, here's the best course of action if you want the flash player, but no other derivs.

- upload your item as usual
- choose an appropriate license
- wait for derivatives to be made (usually takes a few hours)
- check out your item, remove all derivatives except the .flv files and .gif/thumbs files, check item back in

If you need information about how to check your item out, it can be found in the FAQs at http://www.archive.org/about/faqs.php#262

Argh, our http://www.archive.org/details/68_Vintage_Fairlight_VJ_Loops_by_VJzoo just regenerated all the useless derived files again for no reason! We hadn't FTPd or anything, they just reappeared. Grrr. It was painful enough to delete them all once.

And keep the thumbs as well, I'd suggest. People seem to like to print those out.

Thanks for all your help!
